Wistman's wood DartmoorWistmans wood, Dartmoor is a wonderful example of rare, ancient, upland dwarf oak woodland; a 3.5 hectare fragment of forest that likely covered much of the moor before the beginning of clearances during the Mesolithic and Neolithic and the long term impact of grazing. One of its remarkable features is the stunted growth of the trees, Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), which average around just 6m or so, a fraction of the typical height of these trees. Going into the wood is a little like entering a fairy tale. The woodland floor is covered in granite boulders, known as ‘clatter, which keeps grazing animals at bay, and epiphytic ferns, mosses and lichens are everywhere, particularly Usnea species, a clean air lichen. It also supports a large population of common adder (Vipera berus).
